Exploring Pelvic Health:

In this episode of the podcast, Allison chats with Meghan Pritchard, a specialized physical therapist and birth doula from Mississippi. Meghan is a pelvic floor therapist with a passion for helping people who have problems they feel they can't talk about. She shares her own journey with chronic constipation and how she used pelvic floor therapy to overcome it.

Understanding Pelvic Floor Therapy:

During the interview, Meghan explains that the pelvic floor and pelvic organs work together, affecting each other. If there is inflammation or dysfunction in the pelvic organs, it can make the pelvic floor more prone to tightness or tension. Conversely, if the pelvic floor muscles are not functioning correctly, it can affect the function of the pelvic organs.

The Mind-Body Connection:

Meghan and Allison discuss the mind-body connection and how it relates to pelvic health. They talk about the psychological factors that can contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction, such as fear of penetration, trauma, or general PTSD responses. Meghan highlights the importance of addressing the psychological aspects alongside the physiological ones in pelvic floor therapy.

Chronic Constipation and its Impact:

Chronic constipation is a common issue that Meghan sees in her practice. She explains that chronic constipation can lead to increased pressure on the pelvic floor muscles, causing strain and dysfunction. Over time, chronic constipation can also lead to other symptoms, such as urinary incontinence. Meghan shares her personal experience with chronic constipation and how she prioritized regular bowel movements to improve her pelvic floor health.

The Impact of Pregnancy on the Pelvic Floor:

Pregnancy can have a significant impact on the pelvic floor. Meghan discusses how the weight of the baby can exacerbate symptoms related to pelvic organ prolapse, a condition where organs sit lower in the pelvis or protrude through the vaginal opening. She emphasizes that having a prolapse doesn't mean your life is over, and with therapy, symptoms can be managed effectively.

Pelvic Floor Therapy for Men:

In addition to helping women, pelvic floor therapy can also benefit men. Meghan explains that men have a pelvic floor too and can experience similar symptoms, such as urinary incontinence or pain in the pelvic region. She shares some common reasons why men seek pelvic floor therapy, including issues related to prostate health and chronic non-bacterial prostatitis.
